Well it is official! We are snowed-in in Buffalo!!! Our plan was to make the drive back to Boston today after a lovely holiday with my brother, sister-in-law and nephew. However, Mother Nature must feel we have not had enough of Buffalo and after dropping a good foot of snow overnight, we’ve decided to stay put to wait out the storm as it makes it’s trek to New England.
The good news is that it gives me some quiet time to spend planning a small, intimate fondue and game night New Year’s Celebration. Fondue is a great interactive meal for a small group of friends to linger over as you play games and wait for the ball to drop and 2013 to arrive. The wonderful thing about fondue is you can carry out the theme easily through three courses – appetizers, main course, and dessert. Think cheesy creamy goodness to start, yummy meats and fish with a variety of dipping sauces to follow, and then finishing off the evening with sweet bites.
For our first course, cheese is the name of the game. I like to have a variety of raw veggies, fruit and bread for dipping in the creamy cheese fondue. Some of my favorites are broccoli, asparagus, baby carrots, cauliflower, red peppers, grapes, apples, pears and rustic sour dough or brown boule bread.
For the second course, it’s all about the dipping sauces – Horseradish Sauce, Curry Dip, and my favorite, a combination of 1/2 cup Heinz 57 sauce, 1 cup mayonnaise and 1/4 cup ketchup. It’s up to you as to what you would like to cook your meat in – broth, wine or oil (we have always used peanut oil) – all are great selections. For proteins, I like variety – marinated cubed beef filet, chicken breast, pork loin and shrimp.
I also like to add a nice fresh salad to the mix and maybe a potato dish to help compliment the proteins and balance out the meal.
For dessert, it’s all about the chocolate for me! If you know me, you know I am a dark chocolate addict, so this simple sweet goodness is my heaven and the perfect way to roll in the new year. Add a variety of fresh berries and fruit along with some cubed pound or angel food cake for dipping…Mmmmmmm.

As we have the food under control, tomorrow will be all about the drinks for the evening as it is not New Year’s Eve without some delicious drinks to ring in the new year – and with an 8-hour drive back to Boston, chances are I am going to need a drink tomorrow…….
